Don’t skip breakfast in Barcelona
La Boqueria is known for its incredible selection of fresh fruit, amazing ham, and uber fresh seafood. Wandering around the market is a foodie’s dream but make time for a meal at one of the many fantastic restaurant counters.
My favorite meal of my week-long trip to Barcelona was this plate of inky squid over eggs at El Quim. The thimble sized baby squids are served on top of two perfectly fried eggs. Through gestures, your server will tell you to slash through the eggs to release the yolk, enriching the purple sauce of squid ink. The dish is liberally sprinkled with crisp, flaky sea salt adding seasoning and a subtle crunch. Super tender and just a bit sweet, the squid tasted of the sea, not overly salty in the least. At El Quim I also had my first taste of Spanish coffee. I ordered un cortado, an espresso cut with a little milk. Just like my food, it was excellent. I hear cava is popular too, even in the morning, so feel free to order a little bubbly with your breakfast.

Situated in La Boqueria, this stellar tapas bar has the kind of privileged setting no amount of money could buy.
El Quim has the kind of privileged setting no amount of money in the world could ever buy. Situated in the middle of Barcelona’s emblematic La Boqueria, it doesn’t need to create its own ambience, surrounded as it is by the flavors, colors, and buzz of one of Europe’s most iconic food markets. This classic counter bar in the Mercat de la Boqueria is ideal for trying traditional Catalan dishes such as fried eggs with baby squid (the house speciality) or escalivada (smoky grilled vegetables). Daily specials are prepared using whatever is in season, and might include artichoke chips or sautéed wild mushrooms. To continue: Lonely Planet link
Time Out
Quim says that he has the world’s best larder, right next door. And it’s true, you don’t eat things like fried eggs with whitebait or delicious capipota every day.

There is no question that this bar is a classic, but it is also tucked inside another classic: the Boqueria market. Indeed, La Boqueria was recently named the best market in the world and Quim is the bar in La Boqueria (along with Pinotxo, another legendary spot). So, all other considerations aside, this is an obligatory visit while in Barcelona. Go early in the morning (it opens at 7 a.m.), find a place at the counter and ask for the day’s special: it’s worth every penny.
